The last day of the summer school begins

In the morning we listened to the introduction on peacekeeping, peace operations of United Nations and challenges that peacekeepers are facing when going on a mission abroad prepared by Assistant Professor Janja Vuga, PhD, from the Faculty of Social Sciences. Mr. Blaise Ndamnsah from the Casa of CARA Refugee Centre in Gradisca D'isonzo delivered a lecture on international protection systems, treatment of refugees in European Union and bureaucratic and legal issues. He also introduced the importance of  cultural mediation, which is among his main activities.

Workshop on intercultural dialogue. (Photo - Jana Mahorčič)After the lunch break participants were actively engaged into a workshop on intercultural dialogue prepared by our volunteers Ana Podgornik and Tjaša Božič. By using different practical methods they showed us the effects of stereotypes about different nations and cultures communicated through media reporting. Programme finished with a simulation of Security Council of United Nations during which the participants took over the tasks andAt the simulation. (Photo - UNAS) authorities of 15 members of Security Council. They worked on a case of Kosovo in 1999, when the question appeared whether to send there a peacekeeping mission or do something else. The participants had a chance to see what is a veto power of permanent members of Security Council and what kind of effects can it have on the decision making about crucial topics of international peace and security.

This autumn UNAS also hosts an intern from Lithuania, Karolina Kaušylatie, which is why the evening of the second summer school day finished with a Worldcup basketball match between Lithuania and USA.
